I live in Australia and am meeting my girlfriend's parents for the 2nd time, can I wear thongs (flip flops)?

My girlfriend's parents commented last time I met them (for the first time) that I wore thongs and they thought it was a little strange.



My girlfriend agrees and has now asked me not to wear thongs this weekend. I don't think that this is a big deal and they should be more interested in my personality.



Is it just me, who else think it's weird to wear thongs to meet the in-laws?I live in Australia and am meeting my girlfriend's parents for the 2nd time, can I wear thongs (flip flops)?
I thought thongs were the official shoe of Australia. What is the problem?



I can see if you are going to a nice restaurant or the theater that these are not appropriate, but otherwise they are acceptable footwear.



Why would you want to be a phony and not wear what you are comfortable in? If your girlfriend and her parents cannot accept you for who you are, you owe it to yourself to find someone who can. i never wear thongs and can understand the parents ---- saying that its more about how your girlfriend feels ---- think of her and her feelings more than yours ---- it shows respect (not for the parents --- you are not taking them out) --- it shows it for your girlfriend ---- but then i really dont like thongs i prefer to go barefoot ---- especially to the beachI live in Australia and am meeting my girlfriend's parents for the 2nd time, can I wear thongs (flip flops)?
i think that it means that you are more comfortable with yourself and are not afraid to show it. go with what you want.

If you have to ask that question then you are not really secure around the parents. It is bad taste to wear stuff like that around the parents especially if you don't know them to well. Leave the flip flops for the ladies. If you all end up at the beach near the water well I can understand you wouldn't want to wear boots, or nice leather loafers say from Louis Vuitton, Cole Haan, or Ralph Lauren because you would ruin them. Please don't wear flip flops around a girls parents because you feel comfy though it will just send a message to the mom and dad that you are from this SLOPPY DRESSING generation of the late 1990's to 2007 that is disrespectful looking and misunderstood. Lets try to bat 1000 with the new parents. In the long run a few hours in nice shoes will win the WAR and get you in home safe with the parents.
