They survived the plane crash. Everything that happened on the island was real. Everyone dies eventually and they didn't meet in the church until they all did.On Lost did everyone who was on the plane live or did they die?
The scene in the church along with the rest of the "sideways" storyline was kind of like a purgatory in which the survivors met to move on to heaven or something like it. So everyone died before then and everything that happened on the island was real.



The beach crash was not part of the story, ABC just did that help transition according to EW.
