So I have been seriously dating a German guy for 8 months who returned to Germany recently. He and his family whom I have met once, invited me to live and visit them during the summer. I decided this would be a good step for our relationship and will be staying with them in their home for 2-3 weeks. What are the proper ways to act in his home, and what should I bring to thank them? Thank you! What is the proper etiquette for meeting and living with my boyfriend's family?
Bring something that represents your country. Something simple but nice.
Let your boyfriend be the liaison between you and his family, remember, it's for him that your there, but treat the family with appreciation and kindness.
Help his mother with what she may do as household activities like cooking or dishes and when in Germany, do as German people do.
It sounds like this Dude is really serious over you for you to get this invite, and his family wants to get to know you as well.
Hmm! Sounds good! Sounds promising!
Me! ;- )What is the proper etiquette for meeting and living with my boyfriend's family?
Good luck to you both, you will have so much fun in Germany. I would be very polite and courteous to his family. I would always offer to clean up after a meal, help with the laundry, offer to contribute to the food bill etc. I guess just show them that you are not a free loader and that you are willing to help them around the house. Also I'm assuming that you know how to speak German? If not be sure to show them that you are interested in learning their language. Don't let them catch you having personal time with your bf (I guess that's a given though). Oh and I have also learnt not to say anything negative about him to his family. This may sound like a given also but sometimes when you say even the smallest thing about your bf in a tongue in cheek manner the family can take it as a personal attack. You could always treat them all to a meal at the end of your stay to show your appreciation.
