Students live all over SF, the east bay and places like Daly City. There are also students that live in the Park Merced complex near by. Park merced isn't that cheap, as for SF for that matter, but that is if you want to get your own place. You can find a good rate if you just want a room and dont mind sharing. Outside of SF would be cheaper. SFSU is really close to daly city bart and there is a school shuttle between the two locations. Muni line 28 and 28Limited also passes by (starts and ends at bart) Check craigslist for rentals.

There's not really a complex that are popular with students from sf state most travel from diffrent parts of S.F to attend,,and the area around the school is kinda high priced when it comes to living mostly rangeing from average-high renting stature,but thats not to say you wont find any affordble places to live,,Where do people that study at SFSU live?
Most people travel from all parts of SF to go to SFSU. If you want something CLOSE to campus. Theirs Parkmerced (But trust me its not cheap) you could try finding an in law or something in the Sunset area which is where SFSU is located at.
SF isn't the cheapest place to live. I go to SFSU but I live in Daly City, Im pretty close but its way cheaper!
