If you are not a US born, what were the prerequisites you had to meet in order to come and live in US legally?

I am working on an immigration project for a college debate. I am interested on learning what are the requirements people have to meet in order to come to US legally. For example; where I come from, people who want to come to US have to have big money in the bank, properties, some type of business etc. Broke people do not get US visas where I come from. Please share your experience in this subject. Thanks. If you are not a US born, what were the prerequisites you had to meet in order to come and live in US legally?
Well immigration laws are extremely tight now. If you wanted to come to this country legally, you need to put in how much you make, if you were to get a job here (also known as a "worker's visa"), if you were to need government aid, all your permanent records, your properties and how much they are worth, and so on and so forth.

My buddy in Brazil wants to come to America and can't get in and she makes more than $90,000 a year. She's even been here before, too but they keep denying her. Its getting harder for good, hard-working, honest immigrants to come here. Its a shame. If you are not a US born, what were the prerequisites you had to meet in order to come and live in US legally?
Well, my sons and I immigrated from New Zealand through the immediate family category, my having been married to my US husband for (at that time) 9 years. As such, we didn't need to have a set amount of money or other financial/educational requirements, although we did own a home and I had a good job.

My husband, who sponsored me, did have to prove that his income was high enough to support us. The legal requirement is 125% above the poverty level for the household size, which for us was 4 people.

All three of us had to have police and FBI checks done to prove we were of good moral character and we had to have an extensive medical to ensure that we were fit and healthy and had no communicable diseases.

And of course, there are the requirements of proving a bona fide relationship etc etc - not really an issue for me, as due to the length of our marriage, we weren't asked to provide any extra evidence or asked any questions regarding it.If you are not a US born, what were the prerequisites you had to meet in order to come and live in US legally?
Get either immigrant (green card) or non immigrant visas. Also, if you are wealth you can get green card through Investor Employment Based.
